Edgar (Steve) Silestean founded the business under the name E Silestean & Son Limited in 1969 when he acquired the business of 'Prices Candles', a division of Shell Oil. Using some existing plant from Shell Oil and employing the existing foreman for several years, Mr Silestean built his business and developed the brand name 'National Candles'. He had a vision to provide his customers with the finest quality candles made using only traditional methods and materials.

The business was taken over in 1996 by the McLean family who have continued the traditions associated with the business over the years.
